Forgive my long quiet, I have been . . . feeling unusually down lately. Normally I am not prone to such things, but as of late it has been different.
Roxy, your Pikachu should be waiting for you at your nearest Pokemon Center.

I apologize for not having updated. Raichu absorbed too much electricity the day after my last entry and ended up releasing a Thunderbolt that wrecked my computers. I have replaced the old ones, and can now tell you about my trials for new trainers.
From the multiple contenders I had to choose from, I decided to make a mini, point-based tournament. Each trainer was allowed one pokemon per fight.
In the first round I was wasily able to pick out the skilled trainers from the poorer ones. After many rounds, I had six applicants left with impressive scores. Three of them needed to be eliminated from the roster, so I had one final elimination round. I decided on three new trainers, as I wished to pick only the best three.
One boy used a Sandshrew, which was practically unbearable to me - yet the pokemon did fight well against its enemy, a Chinchou. After a long and tough battle, I declared the Sandshrew the winner. I will accept it in the gym - I believe I saw it unleash a Hidden Power of the Electric type in some of the matches.
Another successful applicant used a more standard Electric-type team, which I see great potential in. His Jolteon, especially, is impressive. He triumphed without too much difficulty, over an enemy Drowzee.
Finally, the last trainer had only used an Electabuzz and a Magneton throughout all his matches. In the last round, his opponent used a Machoke - he thought its strong Attack could overpower the weak defenses of Electabuzz and it also had a type advantage over Magneton. In addition to that, its Guts ability made paralyzation a bonus instead of a handicap.
The first trainer shocked me, though, by bringing out a Kirlia! The Psy pokemon can used Thunderbolt, which pleases me, and also handily defeated the Machoke.

My search for new trainers has been running smoothly. I've had 52 candidates submit applications. I immediately rejected those that were unable to fill out the forms. Those that had few or no Electric-pokemon were similarly rejected until such time they came to be in possession of them.
Now I have 24 candidates left, several of whom I expect to wash out and several who seem promising.
I will report back once I have more news.

I have returned to Kanto and settled back into my gym. I have been feeling good, except for a few minor recurrences of my illness, which were all brief in duration.
It is unfortunate, but several of my trainers have decided to set out on their own, including some of my oldest and most trusted ones. They have their own path. I will probably be recruiting new trainers to serve at the gym, which will occupy much of my time, along with the many challenges that have accumulated in my absence.
I shall keep you informed of what occurs with my recruiting and battling. Surely they will be interesting stories.

I will attempt a return to Kanto tomorrow. I believe my problem before will not bother me. I have been away too long, from my gym and from Vermillion. Raichu is eager to return to his home, and I have become concerned with a fetish my Magneton has developed with a certain computer here. I have never seen it behave this way, and I am the foremost expert on Electric-pokemon.
Bill, perhaps you would know; what does it mean when a Magneton looks dazed and leaks oil from its screws? I would think that this is . . . but they are genderless, aren't they?

I have been, unfortunately, wounded during the training exercise.
Due to military secrecy, all I can truly report is that it involved a large Fearow using Razor Wind. The attack was not aimed at me, but evidently it accidentally made the attack go errant.
After being hit, I am told, I fell into a nest of Pelipper, where I was unfortunately covered in their droppings.
Our location was more convenient to Hoenn than Kanto or Johto, so that is where I was treated.
Yesterday, having been discharged from the hospital, I attempted to return to my Kanto Gym.
As I approached Kanto, however, I found myself overcome by a strange weakness. Indeed, even my previous wounds began to grow more painful and threatened to return.
I quickly went back to Hoenn, and soon felt better.
Until I figure out why this is, I shall be remaining in Hoenn.
Fortunately, though, I do have my pokemon and computer now.
Ah, yes. Thanks to Dr. Lenore Stone, who most likely saved this soldiers life. Salute!

I have been away for quite some time. I have been distracted by the recent death of a comrade of mine. He was a good man, killed while selflessly volunteering at the dock when he was crushed by a falling crate. He will be sincerely missed. His body was so mangled that there was not enough left for a proper burial.
I paid a formal visit to Erika of Celadon Gym some time ago, to congratulate her on her gym re-opening. I am aware she specializes in Grass-types, but I presented her with a rare Porygon2, as a symbol of friendship. It was a pleasant trip.
I shall be out of contact for the next few days, due to a routine military training exercise I have been scheduled to attend as an observer.
As a final note, my trainers and I successfully recovered several of the trinkets stolen from the Fuschia robbery. They were packed inside a shipping crate that my Raichu found suspicious. It makes sense they'd ship them through Vermillion, as we are a hub of transportation. I know some were greatly concerned by this theft, and I will keep those who are interested informed of my findings in further investigations - assuming they are not classified, of course.

An interesting challenger yesterday, he was quite skilled. I still defeated him, however, proving again the power of Electric-pokemon.
I was in great danger the other day - a sniper was taking aim at me from across the street. Others have tried to convince me that it was merely a black tube poking out, but they simply don't understand . . . there are people who want me dead.
For that reason I have stayed inside for the last several days.

I am considering leaving the gym. Not as in quiting as a Gym Leader, I mean simply going outside. My trainers have been quite insistent (though not to the point of insubordination) that I have more contact with the rest of the world. In person. Perhaps, if the correct precautions are taken. The details of such a trip and will not be posted here. Even the most secure forms of communication can be monitored.
Maybe eventually they will perfect twisted light technology and then I will be able to be sure.
As a follow up, as some of you might be curious, the trainer who had failed to keep up adequate supplies has corrected the problem.

Today I inspected my trainers, their pokémon, and equipment. Most were in working order. Perhaps not entirely up to par, but they were sufficient. Except for one man. The trainer's pokémon had not been sufficiently rested for battle, nor did he carry adequate rations or medical supplies.
All of my trainers must at all times be carrying 6 Full Heals, 6 Super Potions, 2 Full Restores, 1 Revive and 5 Pokéballs. Anything less than this is irresponsible. I have docked his pay until the situation is resolved.

I am the Vermillion Gym Leader, Second Lieutenant Ulysses Surge. Some of my trainers, who I know have my best interests at heart, felt I spent too much time in solitude. Well, for their sake I decided to join Bill McKenzie's Network so that I may get to know others better.
I hope that doesn't sound too negative. I am sure you are all fine people. I am just not one to be particularly gregarious. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to get to know strong trainers from other areas and with new experiences.
